I recently installed a new automatic 3 speed transmission in my 1994 acclaim. When I start it it makes a horrendous noise that is coming from the bellhousing area. I did notice that it shot a small amout of sparks then a few small pieces of metal fell out. I do know my starter isnt sticking. Any ideas?

A banging noise indicates a cracked flex plate. Every time the transmission is removed, the crankshaft bolts should also be removed along with the thin plate under them to check for cracks around the bolt holes in the flex plate.

Before you start tearing it apart again, look at the inspection cover. Many professionals have accidentally bent them when reinstalling them and it will hit the spinning flex plate.

If the metal chunks look like little pieces of rolled up sheet metal, suspect the inspection cover. If they look like flat pieces of steel, about 1/16" thick, suspect flex plate.
