For the past year my 1993 plymouth acclaim has been jerking at cruising speeds. It seems like the engine is surging repeatedly. The whole car jerks and bucks. This has also been accompanied by a large drop in mpg (over 10 mpg). I've replaced the air filter, spark plugs/wires, distributor cap, O2 sensor and fuel filter. After replacing the O2 sensor, the problem stopped for about 3 weeks. Now it is slowly, but surely returning. I've been told that it may be the ERG valve; however, I'm not sure that these sympotoms match. Is this the problem or is something else wrong?

There is self diagnostics, in the dash.
key on, off, on, off, on. Count the flashing check engine lamp. You may have low fuel pressure or a part has failed that has been replaced. The distributor may be bad. The pick-up plates failed, and many other things can cause the same symptoms. Scan it with a scanner. See this site for this. They had MAP sensor connection problems.
