2000 Other Peugeot Models smoking the town out

my 406 2.0hdi smokes like mad and is abit lumpy when idling then when i drive it smokes like mad untill i get faster, what is the cause

Is your car a diesel? What colour is the smoke? Does it smoke mainly when engine is cold or hot?
