1997 Peugeot 106 Starting Engine

When I try to start my engine it dies straight away, unless I give it gas while starting my engine and for a few minutes after it's started. If I don't give it some gas it won't start on it's own and this happens every time, but it's fine after that. I think it may have something to do with the automotic choke or idle speed? Please help.
