I kept overfilling my gas tank. Did not know it is wrong. Now I got check engine light on and noise when starting the car. What could be the damage?

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.com.

Often times, damage is done to the evaporative emissions system (EVAP). It is caused by raw fuel being forced into it where only fumes should be.

With that in mind, There are a few things that may have happened. What I need you to do is have the computer scanned for diagnostic trouble codes. That will tell us which component has caused the light to come on and then we can focus on it.

Here is a quick video which shows how to use a scanner:

I realize most people do not own a scanner. However, most parts stores will do it for free. Have that done and let me know what codes are found.

Take care and let me know what you find.
