I have a 1988 oldsmobile nintey-eight and im not sure if I need a new catalyac converter or not. The hose in front of the converter coming from under the hood right up to the converter itself has dissconnected due to rust. Do I need a new catalyac converter or another part since its the hose in front of it not the converter itself.

Is this a hose or a steel tube? That steel tube should be part of an air injection system for the catalytic converter and aids in the conversion of NOx gases and CO into harmless Nitrogen and Oxygen. A bad catalytic converter will be accompanied by bad gas millage, hesitation, and with a variable or low engine vacuum as indicated by a vacuum guage. If there seems to be no engine problems a shop can weld on a tube for your air injection pump. I am also assuming the air injection system is operational otherwise you will be irritated by constant backfiring through the diverter valve.
