Engine Mechanical problem
1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

My son was driving the car down the highway and the engine died and he had to pull off the side of the road. The car was towed into a repair shop. The mechanic told me that this car does not have a timing belt. He said that what happened was that the engine "jumped time out of time". He said that that a tooth was off the plastic gear causing it to jump time. He said that it would cost $1100.00 to fix.

What are my alternatives? Should I seek another opinion? The problem is that it is on his lot and will not run so difficult to take it to another place. The car is probably not worth $1100.00.

Could you advise me on this?

Thanks,

Chances are he is correct; however, an other opinion is not a bad idea. As far as the value of the car, I'll tell you what I do. I determine how much the repair will cost, then what kind of a car I can get for that amount. Usually, I fix my car because there isn't much I can get for the repair cost. There are other factors like the vehicle condition, how often I have problems.
