1998 Oldsmobile Bravada Four Wheel Drive Automatic 180000 miles

The vehicle ran fine during the day (gauges were fine). Later on that night it overheated. Let it sit overnight The following morning, tried and it started right up, shut it off, let it sit and put coolant in. Tried starting it after and it would crank but not fully turn over. Waited for about 2 hours, tried again and absolutely nothing, no crank, nothing. Put a new battery in it and it still does not start, it won't even crank or attempt to turn over. I don't know what it could be.

How hot did it get the night before? Are you able to turn the engine by hand?

I used the car the day before and it ran fine no overheating or anything. That night my husband had it and it overheated. Got it home, let it sit overnight. Went out the next morning, started right up. He turned it off, let it sit for a few mins then put coolant in it. About 1/2 hour later he went to start it up and it attempted to turn over but didn't. Thinking it might be the battery, he put a new one in it and tried but still the same thing, attempted to turn over but didn't. Lights work, radio works, have no idea what the problem is.

Okay, now we can limit the possible items. First, I need you to check to see if you can hear the fuel pump run for a second or two when you turn the key on. If you hear it, you need to check fuel pump pressure. Here is a how to for checking:

https://www.2carpros.com/how_to/how_to_check_fuel_pressure.htm

If the pressure is good and the regulator too, then you will need to get a noid light to test for an injector pulse. The gauge and light needed for the test can be gotten at most parts stores. Usually, they will lend them to you.

Let me know if it has pressure. At that point I will decide if you need the noid light or we need to go a different direction.

Let me know.

When you turn the key on you can no longer hear the fuel pump run although you use to be able to.

Teri:
Based on that, I think the pump may be bad. I need you to check for fuel pump pressure. It is easy to do and most nationally recognized parts stores will lend or rent the gauge needed to check it. Do you think you can do it? I'll be here to answer questions for you if you have trouble. Also, did you review the video and directions I sent?

Let me know.

I watched the video showing how you check fuel pressure. Unfortunately, I can't do that because the car doesn't start so I'm inclined to believe what you said about the fuel pump being bad or the fuel line being blocked. If it is the fuel pump, is it possible to replace it yourself on this type of vehicle and if so how would it be done. Thank you.

Actually, you can check to see if there is fuel pressure just by turning on the key. As soon as the key is on, the pump should turn on.

As far as the pump, it is in the fuel tank and can be a pain to replace.

I just reviewed your original post. Is the starter working?

When the key is turned, the fuel pump does not turn on. So I have spark, I have compression and a fuel pump that does not turn on.
