2001 Oldsmobile Aurora Hard shifting

2001 Oldsmobile Aurora 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 65555 miles
My 01 aurora 3.5 shifts hard sometimes, when this occurs it also makes a whining sound. I can turn off the ignition for about 20 seconds and restart engine, most times this corrects the roblem temporarily. What could this be.

Have any warning lights come on? When you have the hard shift, does it seem delayed before it shifts?
