1999 Oldsmobile Alero 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

I had to change the waterpump. I disassembled everything as directed by my car bible. I put 8mm bolts in the two cams where they are suppose to be, changed waterpump, ligned up crnkshaft with dots on it and engine. Reassembled everything and now RPS run at around 4,000 and the exhaust turned glowing red in the 20-30sec. I had it running afterwards. Any help would be appreciated.

**NOTE**
It ran fine before, but
the waterpump leaked.

Thanx in advance

Either you have an exhaust restriction or you're running too rich

Check the exhaust system for excessive backpressure to rule out the catalytic converter and the following for the rich condition

A bad O2 sensor, excessive fuel pressure (bad fuel pressure regulator or plugged return line), leaky fuel injectors, dirty air filter or restricted air inlet, or a defective coolant sensor that prevents the engine management system from going into closed loop mode.
