We had the fuel pump replace a few weeks ago. At the time they also replaced the sending unit. A couple weeks later the car had the same symptoms. Had it towed back to the shop. The next day when they checked it out it started. They said if it happened again to try banging on the fuel tank. It happened, so we did and it started. So we figured it must have been a bad fuel pump so we got it replaced from the parts store and put the new one on. That was last Thursday. Monday it did the same thing - wouldn't start but finally did after banging on it. Just bad parts or something else? You'r opinion would be appreciated

It's hard to tell, maybe the wiring connector, not the pump. I can't rule out a faulty pump. I'd have to test the wiring circuits. Can you test for B+ and ground at the pump connector, wiggle the connector, while testing.

Have you tried running the pump from the prime connector? It should be located by the battery, red wire with connector. If you use an inline fuse and jumper, the pump should run, you don't have to use the key.

I would have to second the answer that it may be the connection on top of the fuel tank. I replaced my fuel tank, and in doing so, had to remove the pump and sending unit. After putting it all back together and driving for a while, my car suddenly quit on me. Sure enough, the connector had come undone. I had to put a plastic zip-tie through the hole in the connector (you'll see it when you look at the connector) in order to keep it plugged in. No problems since then.
