My speedometer has pegged out. I bought a replacement cable from auto zone. Is it really that simple to just pull the old cable out of the housing, measure and cut a new one? Or is there more to this than I'm being told? Thanks for all your help.

Speedo should use vehicle speed sensor (VSS), no speedo cable

Ok thank you. Bought one and replaced with no luck. I removed the dash cover and speedometer cover and can move the needle but when I move the car in either direction the needle jumps. How do I get the gear selector lever unhooked so I can remove the speedometer? Is there any thing else it could be? I'm at wits end.

Just to be clear, is your instrument cluster a digital or the standard analog type?

It's an analog. Everything else works. The gas hand, temp gauge, all lights. But no speedo. Does it have a motor on the back side of it? If so and that's the culprit where can I find one?

No there's no motor, just the vehicle speed sensor for the speedo. Does the tachometer work?

Doesn't have a tach. I think its either the instrument cluster or the pcm. I can't find any other items between the vss and the speedo. Just not to sure how to test.

Thanks,

Chad

No real way to test PCM other than swap it with known good one. How about the odometer, is it working? If it is then the PCM is good because the odo and speedo get the signal through same wiring to PCM.
