1993 Oldsmobile 98 OIL LIGHT COMES ON AND CAR PERFORMS BADL

I have an Oldsmobile 98 Regency Elite. When ever I drive the oil light comes on and the car starts to perform badly. I also changed the oil to see if that was the problem and noticed that after about a mile of driving the oil was scotching hot when I was changing it.
