what would be the next stage of bearings after standard bearings? .25,.50,or .75.

Hi there,
it will be .25 under size. you will have to get the crank ground and your machinist will be able to order the bearings to suit.

on the number 4 piston rod, the rod and cap bearing slides side to side .. but thats it . has no other movement than that. what could cause that?

You will have side clearance, but if the journal and bearing are badly worn you will have excessive slop, you will have to measure the journal and do an oil clearance check and let me know how much side movement there is.
