1999 Nissan Sentra Timing Question

My car broke down on me a while back. I was out of state I had stopped and was about to 70 mph when the engine died and it wont start. It will turn over. I had it towed to a mechanic in the state I was in and he said he thinks it the timing. Fuses, fuel pump, even tried a different distributor and it didnt help. He said he was almost sure it was the timing out. Any suggestions as to whether it could be this or something else. I had the car taken back home while I went on to my destination.
