2000 Nissan Pathfinder Coincidence or related

Week ago decided to have some upkeep done on car New timing belt and new water pump day 7 after repair broke down side of road have the car towed to same mechanic and he says the distributor is sparking out the side not up through the top like it should has nothing to do with repairs done previously. What do you think? Another $450 dollars

Thank you for the donation.

The distributor failing should not be related to the repairs carried out and should be a coincidence. However if the distributor is producing sparks which is jumping out through the cap, it could be a faulty cap, rotor, spark plugs or wires. There is a possibility of solving the problem with replacement of the above items instead of the distributor assy.
