1989 Other Nissan Models my engine check light is on and it

hi please can you help,i have a nissan micra and when i turn the key the engine check light comes on,the car starts everytime i turn the key and it revs up no problem but after five seconds the engine just cuts out please can you give me an idea of what it can be thanks
