Hello,

i just purchased a 1996 maxima and the car runs great! I am very satisfied with the purchase and i've been driving it for a few days now. When I received the car it had 1/2 tank of gas in it and when it was getting low, I put more gas in the car and since putting the gas in the car, the check engine has been flashing on and off every since. I was wondering if I was putting the wrong type of gas in it. I went to "shell" gas station and put number 89 in the tank.

the book stated to use octane 91. Is this high-tect 93 gas equal to octane 91?

like I stated, I drive a 1996 nissan maxima, 5 speed with 219,000 miles.

can't wait to hear from you. Thanks!

The gas you put in is a lower octane than it wants. 91 octane is 91 octane, not 89 or 93.
The reason the light is flashing means there is a condition that damage to the converter is being done and it should not be driven like this. I doubt there is any relationship to the lower octane, but never say never. You need to have the codes pulled and find out what they are, or have a shop troubleshoot it, don't put this off.
