1996 Nissan Maxima Bad MAF Sensor?

My 96 Maxima has been having intermitent problems with lack of power, hard starting when cold, engine revving on it's own and occasional gear hunting. The check engine light came on and I brought it into my mechanic to have the code read. It came up as a bad MAF sensor. Could this sensor be causing all the problems I mentioned above? Any info would be great.

Yes it could the maf acts like a circuit that all of the sensors read through to the computer it will cause stalling hard starting no starting as for the gear hunting that is a new one on me but if the computer cant read the sensors they normally will go insane trying to keep the car going.
