My 1994 Nissan Maxima shuts down on I-95 while my son was driving from work. He says that he saw the RPM falls to zero (0), and since then - - about 4 weeks ago -- - it hasn't started.

He and I changed the spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, the rotor, the fuel filter, air filter etc. The car still refused to start.

We took it to a mechanic who diagnosed the problem as a faulty computer (ECM).

Is it possible that a defective computer can hinder this 1994 Nissan Maxima from starting?

I obtained a used computer about a week ago, took it to the repair shop but now I cannot locate the technician.

Why would the car crank but doesn't start?

Thanks

Hi glenathome,

If the engine does not get the correct signals, it would not start up even if it can crank.

ECM are not known to give way suddenly, usually there is a limp home mode, so it should be able to at least start and allow you to limp home.

You need to check if fuel pressure is present, spark plugs are firing and and nothing has gone wrong with the compression or timing chain/belts.
