Engine Mechanical problem
1988 Nissan Maxima V8 Automatic

The engine starts then stalls almost immediately. If you work the throttle you can keep it running, especially at higher RPM! For awhile if you disconnect the gas line off of the fuel filter outlet & then key to on position, pump will pump for approx. 5 seconds then shut off. Tried swapping out fuel pump relays to no avail. Any other suggestions on what to try or what it can be?

The fuel pump is supposed to do that until the MAF sensor sees air passing through it then it will stay on. If it simply wont idle, check for vacuum leaks and cracks in the air intake boot between the MAF (mass airflow meter) and the engine. Could even be a faulty MAF sensor. Need to install a pressure gauge to verify proper fuel pressure (30 psi at idle and 37 psi with throttle depressed)
