my truck didn't have a gas cap so i bought a cheap one from walmart. after the truck sat idiling a while i could smell gas and noticed it leaking off the top of the gas tank. is it because of the gas cap?

THe cap should be there. It sounds like you have a fuel line leaking where it attaches to the fuel pump at the top of the tank. It could be rusted and leaking. Adding the fuel cap just allows pressure to build and as a result, you see the leak.
