my windshield washer fluid ran out but the light on the dash did not com on please help

There is probably so much crud and corrosion on the sensor that it can tell how much fluid you have. Have either the sensor cleaned, or possibly replaced. Once that is done, always use windshield washer fluid, rather than using tap water.
