Changing Ignition Switch

I have a 2005 Nissan Altima. The key is broken and I currently have tape on it, but it keeps coming loose. My husband is a mechanic and we have a parts car in the junkyard with an ignition switch and key. However, we are unsure if we would be able to use the used ignition switch out of the parts car. We just don't want it to throw a code in the car so that it won't start and we then have to take it to the dealership. Can you tell me if it would be okay to go ahead and change out the ignition switches or not?

Hello,

There is an AF chip in the old key. Take the key apart and glue it to the new key and you should be fine. Here are diagrams to help you. If you do not have the key you must bring the VIN and proof of ownership to get a new key, there is no other way. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what happens.

My key broke to my car. I no longer have the key. The ignition was changed before I bought the car. I was unaware of that. I cannot have the dealer make a new key because of it. Can I take an ignition out of a different car and use it in mine or does the ignition have to be programmed to my car?

The car is off the key did not break in the ignition.

There is a chip in the key. Luckily I got in touch with someone who wasnt affiliated with the dealership and they found out the ignition was never touched and made me two keys. In front of my house. After spending two hundred and seventy dollars to get it towed to the dealership them tell me the ignition was changed and to get it towed back. Thank God for people who aren't out to screw every one

Key wont turn in ignition. Jiggled steering wheel. Gear shift will move without key being on. Tried also with foot on brake. Security light does flash. Cannot start car.

It is getting difficult to start. You have to turn the key several times.(New Starter Motor a few months ago. Installed). I have to change the ignition switch, I suppose. How to change it. Any idea how much they are.

Here is the info you requested.

The steering lock/ignition switch/warning buzzer switch assembly is attached to the steering column by special bolts whose heads shear off upon installation. The bolts must be drilled out to remove the assembly or be removed with an appropriate tool. The bolts may also be removed with a hammer and chisel by notching the bolts and tapping them counterclockwise with the hammer and chisel.

The ignition switch or warning switch can be replaced without removing the steering lock assembly. The ignition switch is on the back of the assembly and the warning switch is on the side.

CAUTION
The models covered by this guide may be equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS, as described in.

REMOVAL:
Disable the air bag system by disconnecting the negative battery cable and waiting at least 10 minutes, prior to starting this procedure.
Remove the steering column covers.
Remove the steering wheel.
Remove the spiral cable assembly.
Remove the combination switch from the steering column.
Remove the steering column support nuts and lower the steering column.
Disconnect the ignition switch wiring.
Remove the bolts that secure the steering lock and remove the steering lock assembly.

INSTALLATION:
Install the steering lock assembly and secure with new shear type bolts.
Connect the ignition switch wiring harness.
Raise the steering column and secure with mounting nuts. Tighten the mounting nuts to 11-14 ft. Lbs. (15-19 Nm).
Install the spiral cable assembly.
Install the combination switch.
Install the steering column covers.
Install the steering wheel.
Connect the negative battery cable.
