Hi, drove around for 3 weeks with a grating sound at high revs. Then doing a sharp u-turn the oil light came on - checked oil and dipstick was dry, looks like no oil in at all. To compound matters when I did fill up I left the cap off, so now the engines a right mess, but I guess I can just steam clean that.
My question is have I done irrepearable damage to the car and should I get rid of it asap? I have since put oil in (and replaced the cap) and it seems to be running fine but am I facing a huge repair bill anytime soon?

Hi there,

if there was no oil the engine would of locked up, but with low oil and the noise you report it sounds as if you may have done some damage, the problem is it may take some time to show up, one thing you can get done is have a sample of the engine oil checked for bearing material, this will show that there has been some serious damage done.
