I got in my vehicle listed above this morning, it has over 170,000 miles, just to pick up some mail, literally 1 minute to mailbox, 1 minute back up a little incline. On the way back from the mailbox I saw the check engine light with check hybrid energy system. I looked it up online to find specifically what it might be, it seems most likely I need a new hybrid battery. The local car dealer/diagnostic says their mechanics aren't trained in hybrids (that is 40 minutes away). Wondering if you could send me a write-up?

It was a colder morning than usual.

Hello JASMINE INDRA,

It could be the battery given the vehicle's age but there are other parts that can fail also. If you have an AutoZone in your area or a similar parts store. Most will read the codes for you for free.

This will give you a better idea of what might be going on when you go have it repaired.

Sometimes it is a dead cell/module or the connection between the modules that corrodes. This will cause excessive resistance and lower the output of the system. Causing a fault and turning the light on.

Sometimes finding a dealer with the right skills to fix these can be difficult. So, I would call Toyota and they should be able to find you a good dealer in your area with the skills to perform this repair or diagnose the issue.

Here is their number:
1-800-331-4331

Have your VIN handy as they might need it.

There is also a second option called reconditioning where they take the old one and clean it up, replace bad modules and other things. A lot of people are using this method since the batteries themselves can be around $4500 or more, never mind the labor costs of having someone put them in.

However, this depends on the area you live in and the dealership you choose.

I found a place that reconditions them. Here is their site:
https://www.thehybridshop.com/battery-conditioning/

There are a lot of other places as well.

This will decrease the cost of the battery, but you will still need it installed.

Looking at your vehicle the cost for the battery retail looks like it is around $4900.
Labor time is around 3.5 hours to just take it out and replace it and does not include anything else. At say $120/hr. you would be closer to between $400-$500 for labor. Plus, any other labor, diagnostics or parts that would need to be included.

So, in the end you will be closer to $6,000 to replace this battery.

The problem with these systems is the batteries are hazardous and the system amperage can kill you if the proper precautions are not taken.

If you do end up getting the codes read at a parts store and would like some more information on them, I am happy to provide it.

One other thing to note is these are big money jobs for dealers, and they want the job. So, they may be willing to make a deal with you to get the job.

I hope this helps and let me know if I can help any further.

Thank you,
Brendon
