Stalls when put in gear

94 eclips, auto trans. This is my sons car and he is in N.C. When he put the car in gear it will stall. If he goes quickly from P to N it will run fine. Anything else it will stall. Idels fine. Previous owner replaced tranny twice with no change, sat for a year now it's my sons or my problem to figure out. Any advice you can give would be a great help. I was thinking a sensor or ecu but he has not had the car coded.

If the " check engine " light is on pull the codes and go from there. There is a sensor that tells the engine to idle higher when in gear it could be bad but you could spend alot of money throwing parts at it and still not fix it.
