My car has been sputtering the past few weeks and when I was driving it the other day it just cut off and won't start back up. At first I thought maybe it had something to do with the fuel but we eliminated that possibility. I then tried to see if I am getting a spark. I was getting a spark from 2 cylinders but not the other 2. I then thought (since I have 2) that possibly I would need a coil. I replaced the coil and it's still not firing up. I had my friend hook up his computer to my car and he said that the code was PO340 and that it said (pending) cam sensor. My friend is a mechanic but he doesn't have a scanner. My question is: if I replace the cam sensor should this fix the problem I am having or are there any other possibilities and what (pending) means?

Wow, im in shock man, my Lancer is sitting in my driveway right now for the EXACT same reasons, I even checked spark and got it on 2 cyl, then changed my coil pack just like you did. Im changing the Cam sensor tomarrow because I scanned the code and got the same reading P0340. All that befor I ever read your question, and I almost thought I wrote it lol. Everyone tells me that changing the sensor will do the trick. I can upload pictures of exactly what you need to do if you or anyone else needs them. Just email me. M. Dilego@yahoo. Com
Its VERY simple to change the part out, and you shouldn't need to re-position the camshaft.
Other than that good luck. Ill let you know if it works for me.

Ok so here it is a few days later, I replaced the CamShaft Pos Sensor and the car still doesnt start (also had to jump start the battery from so many dry starts) I have been trying to find out what to do and it sounds like the last ditch effort is to rock the car while in 3rd or 2nd gear to make sure all the cam gears and ect are moving in sync and also make sure the little marks on your cam gears are lined up. (This might be my prob) its possible for your camshaft or belt to slip just enough to throw your sensor. Other than that im at a loss. Unless its something electrical that got blown in the process. If anyone knows feel free to let us know.
Thanks
Mike

Hi Buky2248 & Bigpimpkins,

When the error code shows a camsensor fault, it could also mean the wiring from the ECU to the camsensor or the ECU itself is at fault.

Rocking the vehicle in gear would not get the timing belt into position, maybe worse if it is loose and skipping tooth.

Are you sure the timing belt has not snapped?

Hello, thanks for getting back to me.
I have checked the timing belt, its not missing teeth and its tight as a drum.I also wanted to rock the car in gear just a little to make sure the parts actually move and im not looking at a siezed engine or transmission. My next step was gonna be to try to pop out the cam and see if maybe it skipped or really is mis-aligned. Either way its been 3 weeks and I need my car. Thanks again
Mike

Hi Bigpimpkins,

If the timing belt had skippped, then you need to look at the tensioner, adjustment and maybe a jammed camshaft.

Have you checked the crank angle?

Just reading your posts I had the same problems figured it out tho. Hope this help you guys if problem has not been fixed.
Ok two cylinders not firing before your buy a new coil try taking the one that's not sparking and simply plug it into the other side ( same plug ) figured this put by trying :)
So the problem is your going down the road and all of a sudden car shuts down and won't start and your not getting spark on one side Im willing to bet its the driver side? Also your throwing code or codes for cam position sensor and crank angle sensor what has most likely happened is you jumped time or worse broke the timing belt the one I'm working on just lost theeth at the crank drive pully so from looking at it it was tight. But have someone crank it mmmm cam gear not moving? Time for a new belt. ( Easy way to check ) pop of the oil cap look inside at the internal parts have someone turn it over. Not moving? You need to do the belt if it is all moving it may have jumped a few theeth if so pull it all apart and reset the belt this is also a good time for a new water pump and belt tensioner. Should take about two hours to do. If you determine the timing and belt is all good the check the cam and crank sensors

Ok just to try and help here if you attempt to start the car and it turns over its not seized.
2 cam can seize up but not often
your belt may look tight but may be missing theeth someplace where you can't see
Im guessing you have the top cover off if so have a buddy crank it while you watch to see if belt and or cam gear is moving if not well I said this b4 time for a new belt.
Ok here is info b4 anyone gets upset
1 people on this post were all driving when problem happend that's why I said try cranking it if dammage has been done this won't make it worse
2 the lancer is and I clarify is a interference motor for those who dont know that means you run a good chance of smacking, bending, breaking valves when the belt breaks or jumps theeth but its a gamble about 50/50 or so I guess so try a new belt or if you can do a leak down test on all 4 cylinders first
3 if you have any? Or correction feel free to post them
hope this info helps get your cars off your drive way ps mitsu want aprox 1000 dollars to do a timing belt so really do the job your self its pretty simple. Also dont go looking for a manuel on this car I dont think anyone other then the dealer makes one at this time also I Belive the tensioner is dealer only belt and water pump are avaible at most local parts stores.
