The night before last, my check engine light came on. There was no noticeable impact to the performance, so I began planning a trip to the mechanic. I drove the car about 45 miles more....when, last night, I stopped at a red light and the engine stopped. I can restart the engine, but it will idle for a few seconds and then just turn off. If I rev the engine a bit, it will rev, but not in the normal proportion of RPMs to pressing the accelerator normally.
Revving the engine to 3k or so, gave me a good amount of power, and allowed me to drive a "twisty" 20 block distance to get it home. But, again, as soon as I stopped the car, the engine stopped.
I don't have a device to get a computer code. But I was hoping for some general simple replacment suggestions so I can try to get "something done" before I am committed to 'any' repair bill. :(
About a year ago...the temperature sensor had gone faulty, causing me to blow the head gasket. I had the repairs done. Since then the car runs fine, but it had problems shifting up and down..and a friend suggested that the oxygen sensors were bad. But the car ran fine...albeit with a somewhat louder, deeper, sound.
In addition, I've only driven the car about 7,000 miles in that time frame...all on the highway between work and home, and never going more than the flow of traffic at about 80mph max, with the occasional passing speed of 85 or so. But I don't beat this car.
