Engine Performance problem
1998 Mitsubishi Galant 4 cyl Automatic 148000 miles

I was driving along car was driving fine no problems. I drove 3 blocks to the store came back out less then 20 minutes. I put the key in the ignition turned it and it was silent. All the lights on the dash was fully lit, horn, and radio powered on fine. I attempted to get a jump no luck. Called AAA they came less then 40 minutes later and the car started with them doing anything. It happened again today this time when AAA came they took a rod and banged on my starter I think and it started right up. Is it safe to say I need a starter. Also after it started this time my check engine light was on. Are the two problems related?

Hi athlete1012, Welcome to 2carpros and TY for the donation.

No its not related-banging on the stater and it causes it to engage the engine is the starter motor itself defective or you can try replacing the brushes instead of a new starter

For the check engine light:

Go to Autozone its a free public service and have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis, finding out what's going on
