2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 152k miles

when going from 1st to second sometimes 2nd to 3rd if I make the car accelerate quicker it red lines at 6 if I get to about 5k or a little over the you hear a squeal like a belt. But there is no serpentine belt on this car. It has 2 separate belts. And on top of that if I hear the squeal I quickly change to the next gear and the motor is lagging like it loses half power or something. What could this be? I've had people tell me a belt. Ive had people tell me catalytic converter is stopped up. Or maybe even both? Any suggestions?

Hi todd9214,

Thank you for the donation.

Squealing noises are usually caused by belts. If any of the belt tensions are insufficient, it would slip when accelerating hard. Check both belt tension and condition. If belt tension and condition are good, check the crank pulley harmonic balancer. It could be failing.

Drop in power would dpend on the vehicle speed and accelerating condition. If the vehicle has not picked up sufficient, chengine to the next gear, especially higher gears such as 4th or 5 th, would result in a drop in performance as the engine rpm would drop low and engine torque could be below the optimum band.
