2002 Mini Cooper Spark plug replacement

I can't seem to remove even the first spark plug to replace it. The spark plug well is as deep as the socket that I have to remove the plug and it is difficult to remove once the socket settles over the top of the plug and is secured by the rubber gasket which is inside the socket.

I don't want to use excessive force to remove the plugs. I'm concerned that I'll damage something. Can you help me?
