Is possible that the timing belt can will cause major damage to the engine?

First, the only belt driven engine from Ford that is an interferance engine is the one you have. Basically what that means is this. If the timing belt breaks, while the engine is still turning, the top of the pistons can hit and bend or damage the valves in the head. Thus, major damage can happen if the belt breaks on this engine.
