Engine Mechanical problem
1995 Mercury Tracer Two Wheel Drive Automatic

My daughter has a 95 mercury Tracer. We just had the brakes replaced and all the brake linesredone, because they needed it... The car was fine after replacing that.
She hit some standing water, now the car won't start. We've checked the sparkplugs, all around the engine to see if anything came loose, there is not distributor , it has something else in its place., well, its not not any of them.
Any suggestions. I am at a loss. And I defintly can not handle another large expense.
