Timing belt

Engine Mechanical problem
1993 Mercury Tracer 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 142000 miles

Dear Sirs:
While driving my 93 Tracer, the engine stalled out. It sounded like there was no fuel going to the engine. Fuel cutoff reset was OK
My mechanic says that the timing belt is broken; needs a kit and a new water pump. He also said that, after all this repair, there may be damage to the engine.
Question: what could the damage be and is it worth repairing?
Thanks

im not a mechanic but this happened to mine and what happened was since the timing belt broke the pistons moved freely causing them to hit and damge the valves...i had someone look at it and was told it would cost $ 325 for labor plus however much the new vlaves cost...
