1991 Mercury Topaz Strut removal

Why would it be so bad if I were to take the top nut off that holds the strut in place? You have me worried.

Because the top nut holds the strut assembly together, you would be letting the spring go (fly out of the wheelwell) There are 3 smaller nuts that remove the strut assembly from the car.I wouldnt attempt this without the proper tools,and a little knowledge of struts. Need a strut compressor at minimum
