The Mercury Sable tries to start but it won't.
Within the past couple of days I have changed

-The battery
-The spark plugs and spark plug wires

I also tested it for codes, but none came up.

I bought a chiltons manual and the best I can come up with is that it is the fuel system.

Also the button in the trunk that resets the fuel pump is not up. (I don't understand what that really means)

Anything that you can help me would help so much!

The reset button will trip in the event of an accident or short. So that sounds good. To me it souns like you have a problem with fuel pump pressure. Here is a how to for checking it.

Check pressure. If it is low at the rail, you could even have a plugged fuel filter.

Let me know what you find.

Thanks Joe! We didn't check the fuel pressure because it costs 40 dollars for the gauge. And:

1) I decided to change the fuel filter because it hasn't been changed in 5+ years.

2) And because the new battery died. So I am thinking that it is the alternator.

When the battery died we tried jumping it and the car started to turn over, but still wouldn't start. A few hours later we tried to start the car but the battery was dead again.

I am getting the battery charged to check if it is faulty. Then I will check the alternator to see if is faulty by taking it off and getting it checked at the auto parts store like the battery.

Is there anything that I am missing? Is there something that I can check?

Thank you

If it does turn out to be the fuel pump the shop will have to fix it.
