1997 Mercury Sable -CMP-CAM positioning sensor

I WAS WONDERING IF IT IS NECESARY TO SET CYLINDER NUMBER 1 TO ZERO DEGREES TOP DEAD CENTER TO REPLACE THE CMP SENSOR?
IM NOT CHANGING THE HOUSING JUST THE SENSOR.
IF I DO HAVE SET CYLINDER NUMBER ONE HOW WOULD I GO ABOUT DOING THIS TASK?

If the 8th digit in your VIN is "S" then you do not have to synch it. If the 8th digit is anything except "S" then you will have to perform the CMP sensor synchronizer procedure, follow steps below..

Thank you for the info on the cam positioning sensor.I just need to know which cylinder is 1 and how do I get it (tdc) with no marking.(V6 3.0 ohc motor).

Crankshaft damper timing marks should align with TDC mark on timing degree indicator
