Transmission problem
2002 Mercury Mountaineer V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic 112k miles

I have received an estimate for repairing my transmission. For $1800 with a 12 month warranty they can order the affected parts and repair. The alternative is purchasing and installing a rebuilt transmission for $3500 with a 100,000 miles warranty. I plan to keep the vehicle for another 3 years or 50,000 miles. Are they basically rebuilding my transmission for the lower price?

Hi there, often is re built, they will do the required repairs to bring the trans back to a general state of good general operation, major components are normally not replaced if not required, such as gear sets, pump housings servo pistons etc, with Re-co change over many of these components are replaced that is why the cost is higher for a more complete and basically a new re manufactured trans, the choice is yours, if you have any doubts about what you get with the cheaper o/haul talk to the re builder to get a complete picture of what will happen.

Thank you for your prompt response. I will speak to my mechanic on Monday and review the details. I'm just concerned that I'll pay the lesser amount and another part of the transmission will fail due to age. I have not had great luck with Ford/Mercury transmissions!

Hi there,

Well that is always a possibility, but normally the major components don't give any problems unless the trans has been subjected to abuse or low oil problems incurring sever overheating, even then any damage is normally very evident.
