Engine Mechanical problem
2002 Mercury Mountaineer 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

Trying to decide is a starter is bad. Earlier in the month the alternator was replaced. Now haveing starting problems. Turn key, solenoid will click for about 5-20 seconds before turning over the engine. My feeling is starter is about to go. Just wanted to confirm before I ask recently divorced mom of 4 (unemployed) to shell out 165 bucks for new starter.

it's possible starter is indeed failing, i would suggest having a local auto part store test it though , most do it for free either off or on vehicle. it may also be rebuilt which is cheaper than buying a brand new one. at the very most i would purchase a replacement starter at a local auto salvage yard or online at sites such as ebay , instead of getting a new one. FYI I did quick search on ebay.com and found several new starters for your vehicle for around $70 ..
