2001 Mercury Marquis
The car will start every time, but will turn off almost immediately if the accelerator isn't pressed. When you press the accelerator during start-up it will stay started until you take your foot off the pedal, then it will turn off. Also, while this is going on, it is impossible to put the car in any gear - it stays stuck in park.
After trying it multiple times, I suggested moving the gear prior to turning on the car - the gear still wouldn't change.. however right after this attempt we did the regular start-up procedure and it worked fine.
Now, it's continuing to function properly save the fact that it takes more strength to change gears than it should - just how it started acting prior to the issue. This leads me to think that whatever happened isn't solved & this same thing will happen again.
What could the problem be?
