1999 Mercury Marquis Wiper blades motor

The windshield wiper motor only works on the fastest speed and off mode. The local parts store manager advised me to try and feed a new ground wire from the wiper motor to the engine block. It's been told to me that Mercury's have had grounding issues. Could this work or is it time to replace wiper motor? "Love those electical problems"...
