my car -96 mercury grand marquis - first turned off at a red light. Then It started again - brought it in and was told no diagnostics showed a problem. They put in an alternator. One week later stooped again (still cranks) if you wait 10 mins starts again. They replaced same part. Today (2 weeks later) they towed it again and told me it was a new problem - something under car that should not affect it starting. I feel taken. They tell me it could happen again and again, fixing problem is a crapshoot. Is this true. Car has 120000 miles - am I better off getting a new car?

Hi:
I can't tell you if you should get a new car because I don't know what vehicle. What is it that they wanted to replace under the car? Also, I question if the alt needed replaced.

I gave up - after the alternator was replaced (twice- they said maybe the first replacement was defective) theyy wanted to change the water pump even though they could not see how that could cause stalling. But being towed 3 times in 2 weeks with nno definitive answerand possibly endless costs, persuaded me to donate my car and now I have a new toyota camry.

I agree with your decision. And the water pump would have done nothing for a starting problem.

Good luck with the new one.
