I just bought my 2002 Mercury cougar in August. It is a V-6 with about 80k auto. About a week after I bought it the check engine light came on. It won't go off. About a month later my car wouldn't turn over and we had to replace the battery. Still the check engine light is on. We took it to a mechanic and they ran a diagnostic on it. They said it had to do with emissions. What do I need to check before I pay the money to have someone else do it?

You need to find out the codes
What happen is computer monitor the engine and tranny operations
And if something wrong the light will come on
And it will store a code in the memory
So if you can get the code that will help pin point the trouble area
Good luck
