I've had 3 alternators put on this car and installed 2 batteries in less than a year and here is the problem I keep having.
The car loses power while driving. The instruments start going crazy, it starts spitting and sputtering and then it dies. When it dies I mean you can't even roll the windows down or blow the horn or even take it out of Park until you jump start it. This gives it just enough power to start the car but when you take the jumper cables off it dies again immediately. I've had 2 separate electrical specialty shops look at it and they can't find anything wrong. They switch the alternator and it works perfect for a few day then repeats itself.

Your vehicle has a recall on part of the charging system, specifically the alternator and its wiring. I suggest taking your Cougar to a local FORD dealer and mentioning your issue to them and insist on having the recall issue taken care of. Reference number for the recall is : 01V031000

OMG! Are you serious? I've had this problem for a little over a year and have never heard this from either of the Electrical Specialty shops I've had work on it. Amazing. Also, I've never received anything from Mercury/Ford concerning a recall and I bought the car new. Thank you very much for the info and I'll call the dealer first thing Monday morning.

I called the local ford dealer and was told that 01V031000 was not a valid recall number. I had him check using my VIN # and was told there were no recalls on my vehicle. Were you successful on your vehicle getting problem resolved? Thanks.
