1989 Other Mercedes Benz Models 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 300E miles

My 89 Mercedes failed to pass exhaust inspection in TX--ran beautifully, however; had tune up (twice actually) spent nearly $1,000. Since "tune up" car misses out--sometimes badly--occasionally runs well; I've taken the car twice to mechanic who claims oil leak and head gasket leak combined fouls plugs; but before the 2 "tune ups" the car ran beautifully; I can't afford to spend a lot of money again. Any suggestions?

For about $50.00 you can buy a block test kit, this will indicate if hydrocarbons from exhaust are present in your coolant, if they are, the head or head gasket is bad, if that is the case you will need to repair it, or you will not solve the missfire.
