1982 Other Mercedes Benz Models Automatic 250000 miles

!982 300 D. After running smoothly for a few miles the car seems to loose power and have difficulty idleing without excessive foot pumping. The car will then have difficulty stating for a few minutes and then run slowly and with obvios loss of power back to my barn. What could be the cause? I am suspect of the trnasmission but need advice.
