1998 Mercedes Benz C230 Manual 300000 miles

I was driving along the highway and suddenly my car engine stop. Tried to start it, could not. While trying to start it, I heard a funny noice where the starter is positioned. I've push the car while in gear forward and backward to see if the engine is still loose - fine.

Do not want to start yet.

I would suspect a faulty crankshaft position sensor. When this looses it's signal the vehicle will stall abruptly and will cause difficult or no restart. The noise you heard may be the starter engaging but if the Crank sensor is faulted most of the time the vehicel will just crank.
