1998 Mercedes Benz 420sl Trying to access dead battery

1998 Mercedes Benz 420sl V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic
I am trying to get to my dead battery in the trunk, but cannot get the trunk open. I have the key on the remote control (needs a battery, also) but using it to manually open trunk doesn't do anything - key turns in the trunk lock but doesn't release trunk.

If you can get to the starter battery terminal apply your battery charger there and see what happens when you get up to charge attempt
