Electrical problem
1999 Mazda MX5 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

I have Miata in my bay and I'm having trouble with it. Cutomer complained that the car was runnig fine and after a short trip to the store, the car wouldn't turn on. I get it into the shop and start checking all obvious things, fuses, coil packs, haresses and connectors, even sensors. I have no fuel nor spark. My final thought is the ECU is fried but the part is too expensive to just buy. I tried to unplug sensors to purposely set off the check engine light, but no luck. It won't even do that, so the scan tool isn't helping. Is there any way to check the ECU without having to buy another one first? Or do you have any suggestions with my problem?

Thank You,
Kyle

Hi Kyle,

Thank you for the donation.

There is no way of testing if the ECU is bad except by using a substitute. Here are some possible causes that you can check.

NO START (CRANKS NORMALLY)
Check fuel pump relay. "Â
Check by -pass air control valve. "Â
Ensure crankshaft position sensor has correct resistance value. "Â
Check for cracks and poor connections at mass airflow sensor or throttle body. "Â
Check ignition coil resistance. "Â
